Nose: Cherry, Raspberry, Strawberry and Violets
Palate: Red Fruits as you would expect. elagent and long finish. Nice mushroom, earthy, leather and cedar spice, but not overpowering. The palate journey starts as a single point that gently, but assuredly, expands and evolves into a flourishing finish.
Cellaring: While drinking well now,it is best to decant this wine for at least a half hour to open right up. The optimum drinking window remains some years away. We expect further complexity to emerge with bottle age over the 3-5 years,
Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery. The Macedon Ranges is the coolest viticultural area on mainland Australia.
The oldest vines were planted in 1992. Subsequent plantings (1993 to 2019) have seen the vineyard grow to 14.5 hectares. The majority of the area is planted to Pinot Noir (72%), with smaller plantings of Chardonnay (23%) and Pinot Gris (5%). A diversity of aspect and clone provide multifaceted winemaking opportunities. The red volcanic basalt soils have structure and depth allowing the roots to descend many metres – increasing the soil volume able to be exploited by the vines.
In 2006 they ceased using herbicides and have seen a marked improvement in soil microfauna. The resulting increase in organic matter is staggering and bodes well for a healthy future for our vines.
