The Yalumba "The Octavius" has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the first release was the 1990 vintage. The 1997 is deep cherry red in colour with a nose layered with liquorice, cherries, violets, and black olives supported by rich vanillin oak aromas. The palate is an explosion of sweet berry fruits, rich plums with long grainy tannins leading to and a warm peppery finish. Recommended cellaring for 10 - 15 years.
The 2019 The Octavius is medium deep crimson in colour. This has such an intensity of fruit, dark plums, black cherry and blackberry aromas. Then the vanilla, spice, chocolate and black pepper hints, with nods of praline emerge and evolve, fragrant and spicy. A generously proportioned wine, balanced and rich, the palate swirls with pure blackberry pastille, cassis and sage flavours. Hints of ginger and roasted nuts lead into the smoothly honed, chocolaty fine tannins that linger on and on.
